Abstract

We investigate the impact of state-led television propaganda on traditional gender roles on child welfare in Indonesia. Our findings reveal a significant, adverse impact: greater TV exposure is associated with a 1 percentage point decrease in the survival of girls under five, with no corresponding effect on boys. This mortality effect is driven entirely by mixed-gender households, pointing to a mechanism of intra-household competition. We trace this outcome to a gender-differentiated investment pattern, rooted in a measured decrease in maternal aspirations for daughters. This pattern manifests as disinvestment from girls, who are significantly less likely to be breastfed, and preferential investment in boys, who are significantly more likely to be vaccinated and are better protected from diarrhea. Our results show that state media shifts household preferences, leading to discriminatory resource allocation with survival implications
